Fontenelle Forest

A nonprofit nature preserve on the Missouri River bluffs with boardwalks, miles of trails and a canopy-level raptor refuge.

Fontenelle Forest is a nonprofit nature preserve in Bellevue, on bluffs above the Missouri River, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Omaha. It protects deciduous forest, oak savanna, prairie and wetlands within the metro area. A nature center serves as the starting point, with a trail map, exhibits and rental equipment, so first-time visitors can orient themselves before heading out.

The Riverview Boardwalk is a mile long, with views toward the Missouri River, and it is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The Wetlands property has a flat, one-third-mile wooden boardwalk, also accessible. Beyond the boardwalks, longer trails wind through the forest for more energetic hikers, and birdwatchers will find plenty to do in every season.

The Raptor Woodland Refuge is a canopy-level exhibit about 30 feet above the forest floor, designed to resemble the natural habitat of the rescued birds that live there. The Baright Gallery in the nature center has exhibits on the forest's history. Binoculars and educational backpacks can be rented from Visitor Services, and strollers, wheelchairs and power scooters are available free.

Fontenelle suits families, couples, birders and anyone who wants a quiet walk close to town. Dogs are not allowed at any Forest property, and biking, jogging, drones, smoking and fires are also prohibited. Trails can be slick after rain or snow, so wear shoes with good traction.
