Hitchcock Nature Center

A Loess Hills preserve north of Council Bluffs with about 14 miles of hilltop trails, prairie views and a fall raptor migration count.

Hitchcock Nature Center is run by Pottawattamie County Conservation and sits in Iowa's Loess Hills near Honey Creek, about a 30-minute drive north of downtown Omaha. The Loess Hills are wind-deposited silt formations that county conservation staff describe as globally significant, with remnant prairie that is rare in Iowa today. The setting feels remote even though it is close to the city.

About 14 miles of unpaved trails cross ridgelines, prairie and woodland. Some are easy ridge walks and others involve steep climbs, so choose according to your fitness. Trail maps are available at trailheads and at the Loess Hills Lodge, which sits at the park's highest point and has restrooms, a gallery, a gift shop and an observation tower and deck.

From September through December, volunteers conduct HawkWatch from the tower, counting migrating eagles, hawks and other raptors. Visitors can climb the tower and chat with the volunteers, though the research equipment is for HawkWatch use only. Fall is also a good time for color on the hillsides.

The park is best for hikers, birders and photographers. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and owners must carry out waste. Bikes, horses and ATVs are not allowed on trails. Prescribed burns can occur, so check burn maps if that concerns you. Roads are narrow with a 15 mph speed limit.
