J's Smokehouse BBQ
A Texas-style barbecue spot near 96th and Q that began as a food truck. The owner smokes meats over oak with a simple salt-and-pepper rub. The menu runs from brisket and ribs to brisket tacos and a double smash burger.
J's Smokehouse is a family-run, Central Texas-style barbecue business. Local TV coverage tells the story: James Hawk started smoking meat in his backyard, then sold from a tent outside his mother Nicole Bilgere's karate shop and later from a food truck. The restaurant side took off in 2023, and this ordering page lists a location at 4725 S 96th Street in Omaha.
The cooking follows the Central Texas playbook: a salt-and-pepper rub, oak smoke and a vinegar-based sauce, with brisket smoked for around ten hours. The Omaha spot is built around takeout, with pickup and delivery on Toast, so it is more a place to grab a tray than a long sit-down dining room.
The menu goes beyond the usual plates. You will find platters of one, two or three meats, brisket and pork sandwiches, ribs by the slab, half slab or single rib, brisket and pork tacos, quesadillas, smash burgers and mac-and-cheese bowls topped with brisket or pork. Sides include Mexican street corn, BBQ beans, slaw and potato salad.
J's is great for an easy dinner in the south-central part of town, a group order using the Texan platters for four to six or eight to ten, or a taco night. Hours are split into lunch and early dinner windows on Tuesday through Saturday, and it is closed Sunday and Monday. Some items run out, so ordering ahead helps.
