Johnny's Cafe
Family-owned steakhouse open since 1922 beside the old stockyards, with brass steer-horn doors and a dining-room mural. Prime rib and steaks anchor the menu. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Johnny's Cafe opened in 1922 as an eight-seat saloon beside the Omaha stockyards, founded by Frank Kawa. His sons Jack and Tom took over in the early 1960s, and Jack's daughters Kari and Sally began running day-to-day operations in the 1990s, making the current generation the third. The cafe's website announces that it is a 2026 James Beard America's Classics award winner, a national honor given to long-standing, locally owned restaurants with timeless appeal and strong ties to their communities.
The look still carries the stockyards era. A 1970s renovation added the brass steer-horn front doors and improved the dining room mural. The restaurant takes reservations by phone only, for parties of any size at lunch or dinner, so call (402) 731-4774 rather than looking for an online booking page. It sits at 4702 S. 27th Street in South Omaha, beside the former stockyards district where the business began.
Dinners include a house salad or soup, a potato and fresh-baked rolls. The menu centers on aged-on-premise steaks such as the T-bone, ribeye, Omaha strip and filet mignon, plus slow-roasted, hand-cut prime rib and the Primewich, a shaved prime rib sandwich. Chopped steakburgers, chicken fried steak, catfish, lobster tail and a house cottage cheese spread round things out, with hand-breaded onion rings and Chocolate Caramel Decadence for dessert.
Johnny's fits a classic steak dinner, a weekday lunch or a stop for anyone interested in Omaha food history. Daily lunch specials rotate, with braised ox joints on Tuesday and roast turkey on Thursday. It is closed Sundays and Mondays, on December 25 and the Friday after Thanksgiving, and open on select holidays, so call ahead when planning around a holiday.
