BLUEBARN Theatre is a nonprofit professional theater company based at 10th and Pacific streets, on the northern edge of Little Italy and about two blocks south of the Durham Museum. Its stated mission is to provoke thought, emotion, action and change, and its programming leans toward contemporary plays and fresh takes on classics rather than big touring musicals. The 2026-27 season is the company's 38th.
The theater's home on South 10th Street drew national notice when Slate named it on its list of the best things America built in 2016. The house is intimate and seating is general admission, so arriving a little early gets you a better choice of seats. The lobby opens 45 minutes before curtain, and the Ailsa Craig Bar serves wine, beer and cookies before the show and at intermission.
The 2026-27 lineup runs from the musical revue Rise: Songs of Resistance and Resilience in the fall to Ryan Landry's holiday parody Silent Night of the Lambs, Eric Overmyer's On the Verge, the one-actor An Iliad and Bess Wohl's Liberation in early summer 2027. Evening shows generally start at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday performances in the afternoon or early evening. BLUEBARN also partners with Film Streams on National Theatre Live screenings.
BLUEBARN fits well into an evening in Little Italy. Via Farina is next door for pizza before the show, and the theater itself suggests nearby spots such as Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors for a drink afterward. The building is wheelchair accessible, and the company offers assistive listening, audio description, large-print programs and ASL-interpreted performances on set dates.
