The Durham Museum

A history museum inside Omaha's landmark Art Deco Union Station, with train cars, regional exhibits and an old-fashioned soda fountain.

The Durham Museum fills the former Union Station, which opened on January 15, 1931. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed the building in the Art Deco style, and the grand main hall remains a highlight before you even step into an exhibit. The station was saved in 1975 by volunteers who turned it into the Western Heritage Museum, the forerunner of today's Durham Museum. That story of preservation is part of the visit, since the building itself is among the museum's most impressive artifacts.

Inside, rotating special exhibitions sit alongside permanent displays on the history of Omaha and the region. The museum also keeps train cars you can explore, bringing the golden age of rail travel to life. Check the current exhibits page to see what is on during your trip. Don't skip the Soda Fountain and Candy Shop. It is a pleasant break between galleries, especially for families.

The museum is located at the edge of the Old Market, so it pairs naturally with a walk through the historic district. It is a strong choice for history buffs, families with school-age children and anyone seeking a rainy-day activity. Advance tickets are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome.
