Gene Leahy Mall is one of three downtown parks that make up The RiverFront, a 72-acre public space linking the Old Market with north downtown. According to The RiverFront's website, the mall reopened in its new form on July 1, 2022, after a major redesign of the long-standing downtown green space. The park is built for lingering. Winding paths, shaded seating, open lawns and water features make it a comfortable place for a walk, a picnic or a coffee break. It sits at the edge of the Old Market, so many visitors pair it with a meal or an afternoon of shopping in the historic district.
Families will find play features designed for different ages, and the park is also home to winter ice skating when the season arrives. Reservations for ice skating are handled through a linked booking site, and the RiverFront posts a calendar of activities and events, so it is worth checking what is on during your dates.
Gene Leahy Mall also works as a connector. From here a pleasant walk east leads to Heartland of America Park and then on toward Lewis & Clark Landing, the Kiewit Luminarium and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. A morning here can easily grow into a full day on foot. It is a good fit for families, couples and groups who want a free, flexible outing. Plan around the weather, since most of the experience is outdoors, and consider an evening visit when the lighting and water features give the park a different feel.
