Joslyn Art Museum

Omaha's major art museum, with more than 30 galleries spanning ancient to contemporary work, three connected buildings and sculpture gardens. General admission is free.

Joslyn Art Museum is Omaha's leading art museum, located on Dodge Street just west of downtown. Its collection spans ancient to contemporary art across more than 30 galleries, so a visit can range from historic European and American work to modern and contemporary pieces. General admission is free to all.

The museum is made up of three connected buildings with distinct designs, and a 42,000-square-foot addition was part of its recent reopening. Moving through the spaces, you can see how the architecture shifts from older to newer wings, which is a pleasure for design lovers in its own right. Outdoors, the Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden and the Dorothy and Stanley Truhlsen Discovery Garden wind around the buildings, mixing art, architecture and landscape. In good weather they offer a relaxed walk between galleries, and they are especially nice for families with children who need space to move.

Special exhibitions rotate through the year; check the museum's calendar to see what is on during your stay, as some may carry separate ticket fees. Thursday evenings have extended hours, which makes them a good time to visit after a day of other sightseeing. Joslyn suits art lovers, couples and families alike, and it is an easy rainy-day option. On-site parking is free, with metered street parking nearby, and a covered drop-off sits at the main entrance.
