Little Bohemia grew up along South 13th Street, just south of downtown, as the home of Omaha's Czech immigrants. Czechs began arriving in the United States in the 1860s, and the National Park Service notes that nearly all of Omaha's Czech community settled around 13th and William streets, an area also called Praha or Bohemia Town. Residents built small houses at the back of their lots so they could add a shop or larger home in front later, and many lots still show that pattern. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The landmark buildings are still here. The three-story, 19th-century Prague Hotel on 13th Street is the centerpiece of the historic district, and the former Bohemian Cafe building next door served Czech food from the 1920s until 2016. At the south end, the old Sokol Auditorium, built for a Czech gymnastics society, is now the Admiral, a concert and events hall. A developer announced a $40 million preservation and redevelopment project for the area in 2025, per local TV.
Today the strip is one of Omaha's most walkable bar and restaurant clusters. Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors serves ice cream cocktails and burgers, Masa Luna pairs handmade tamales with agave spirits, Tiny House Bar pours cocktails in a converted house, and Lumen Beer runs a small taproom. Archetype Coffee roasts on site,, a short walk from the old Bohemian Cafe building. Down on Vinton Street, Louie M's Burgerlust serves diner breakfasts and burgers.
There's no single big festival, but the neighborhood's Czech roots show up in occasional events. In 2021 the Czech-themed beer hall in the old Bohemian Cafe space teamed with the Omaha Czech/Slovak Cultural Club on a free August Czechfest with polka and kolaches, and the historic Bohemian Gardens hall at 1424 South 13th Street hosts courtyard events and family pizza nights.
