A wooded Nebraska state park with a waterfall hike, an observation tower, mountain biking trails and a spray park.
Platte River State Park covers about 450 acres of wooded bluffs and creek valleys near Louisville, Nebraska, between Omaha and Lincoln. It is roughly a 35-minute drive from downtown Omaha. The terrain is more rugged and forested than much of the surrounding farmland, so it feels like a real getaway while still being close to the city.
The most popular hike leads along a creek to the Stone Creek waterfall, which Nebraska Game and Parks calls a must-see. The observation tower gives views over the forest and the Platte River valley and is a good spot for watching birds. Woodland trails are popular with hikers and photographers, and the park also has fishing at Jenny Newman Lake and Decker Creek.
Mountain bikers have about 17.5 miles of trails with challenging obstacles and easier bypasses, plus a newer 4.5-mile addition. Families will find a spray park, Crawdad Creek for kids to explore, and the Roger G. Sykes Outdoor Heritage Education Complex. Seasonal horseback riding is also available.
Visitors can stay overnight in the campground, camper cabins, modern cabins, glamping cabins or the Pawnee Tepee Village. The park suits hikers, bikers, families and couples who want a nature day without a long drive. Wear sturdy shoes, since creek-side trails can be uneven and slippery after rain.
