Henry Doorly Zoo's drive-through park near Ashland, where you roll through herds of native North American wildlife from your own car.
Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park is run by Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and sits just off Interstate 80 near Ashland. The main attraction is a scenic drive-through loop where you stay in your own vehicle and pass animals native to North America, set in rolling Nebraska grassland and woodland. It is about a 35-minute drive from downtown Omaha, which makes it a convenient half-day trip that pairs well with other Ashland attractions.
The drive is the heart of the visit. Expect large hoofed animals such as bison and elk in open pastures, with other species in separate habitats along the route. Keep your windows and doors as directed by park staff, drive slowly, and give animals plenty of room. Because the animals roam in big spaces, what you see changes from day to day, and patience and a good pair of binoculars both help.
Beyond the drive, the park has a visitor area where you can stretch your legs, along with a walk-through section and seasonal attractions that change from year to year. Check the zoo's website before you go for what is currently open, including any special exhibits. Walking portions can be longer than they look, so bring comfortable shoes and water.
The park suits families, photographers and anyone who prefers watching wildlife from a car, including visitors with limited mobility. Hours, seasons and prices are set by the zoo and have changed over the years, so confirm them on the official site or by phone before heading out. It is a seasonal park, so do not assume it is open in winter.
