Slowdown is a rock club and bar on North 14th Street in North Downtown, a few blocks north of the Old Market. It was founded by Saddle Creek Records' Robb Nansel and Jason Kulbel, and the building it sits in was developed as a home for both the club and the label. The name nods to Slowdown Virginia, an early band on the label that later became Cursive. Neighbors in the complex include Film Streams and Saddle Creek Records.
Most of the calendar is touring and local rock and indie music, with occasional DJ nights, community events and private parties. The venue says it aims for shows three to four nights a week and is closed on nights with nothing booked. There are two rooms: a main room with a stage, a standing floor and some first-come tables, and a smaller front room with its own bar. The Reader once put the main room at more than 700 people and the front room at about 200 (press estimates, not official figures).
Shows are all ages unless the listing says otherwise, but everyone needs a photo ID to get in. Guests 17 and under need a parent or guardian with them or a notarized consent form on file, and guests under 21 are admitted no earlier than one hour before showtime. The bar takes cash and cards, and the club posts a menu on its website. Bags larger than about 5 x 6 inches are not allowed, and there is no coat or bag check.
Doors usually open an hour before the event, and most shows start between 8 and 9 p.m. See Tickets is the club's official online seller, and tickets bought with cash at the box office during open hours carry no fees. The club says there is plenty of parking nearby, and the area is close to Charles Schwab Field and the CHI Health Center, so it fits well with other North Downtown plans.
