The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts is an exhibition space and international artist residency in a large former warehouse on South 12th Street, in the Old Market district. Its stated mission is to support the creation, presentation and understanding of contemporary art through residencies, exhibitions and educational programs. Bemis was founded in 1981 by Jun Kaneko, Tony Hepburn, Lorne Falk and Ree Schonlau.

The building also contains live and work studios for visiting artists, so a visit offers a sense of a working creative community rather than only a gallery. A curator-in-residence program, started in 2017, adds to the center's research and exhibition work. Guided exhibition highlight tours are offered from time to time. Bemis is a good match for art lovers, couples and groups exploring the Old Market on foot. It is also a free, indoor option on a rainy day. Metered street parking and a nearby city garage are available, and bike racks and a bike share station are close to the entrance.
