Heartland of America Park is the middle link in The RiverFront's chain of three downtown parks. The RiverFront's website reports that this park, together with Lewis & Clark Landing, reopened on August 18, 2023, following the earlier opening of Gene Leahy Mall in 2022. Together the parks form a 72-acre public space. As the name suggests, the park is organized around water. A lake and fountain anchor the landscape, and paths wrap around the shoreline so you can take a loop at any pace. Landscaped beds, trees and benches provide plenty of spots to sit and watch the water.
The park suits relaxed outings: a morning walk, a lunch on the grass, or an evening visit as the city lights come up. Families can use it as a break between museum stops, and couples often choose it for a quiet stroll between dinner in the Old Market and the riverfront paths.
It is also a natural midpoint for exploring the whole RiverFront on foot. To the west lies Gene Leahy Mall and the Old Market; to the east and north are Lewis & Clark Landing, the Kiewit Luminarium and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. You can string them together into an easy half-day. There is no admission, and the RiverFront publishes an event calendar of daily activities supported by community partners. Check it before you go, since programming changes by season and can affect how busy the park feels.
