The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, housed in a former warehouse on the edge of the Old Market, is known internationally for its artist residency program. Every fall it raises money for that program with its Benefit Art Auction, and the lead-up is one of the best free art viewings in the city.
For about three weeks in October, the galleries hold more than 300 works donated by more than 200 artists, from local favorites to nationally known names. Anyone can walk in and browse, and many pieces are offered through Buy It Now or bidding before the main event.
The season ends with the auction night itself, a ticketed party that is a highlight of Omaha's arts calendar. Visitors who just want to see the art can stop by during regular gallery hours at no charge.
