Heartwood Preserve Kite Festival

A free fall weekend of giant show kites, some as big as a school bus, over the open prairie at Heartwood Preserve in west Omaha.

A Saturday and Sunday in mid-October, noon to 5 p.m. · Heartwood Preserve

Omaha's newest kite tradition launched in October 2025, when giant show kites filled the sky over Heartwood Preserve, a conservation-minded development with open prairie and trails just south of Dodge Street at 144th. The 2026 festival was the second annual.

Professional kite flyers bring enormous inflatable kites shaped like animals and characters, some as large as a school bus and strong enough to need serious anchoring. Families are welcome to bring their own kites and fly them alongside.

The event is free and relaxed, and it pairs well with a walk on Heartwood's trails. Hundreds of people turned out for the first edition.
