Shucks Fish House & Oyster Bar

A casual Omaha fish house and oyster bar with several locations, this one on South 119th Street. The owner promotes the company as a local fishmonger, and Blue Point oysters are featured. Happy hour runs daily from 2 to 6 pm.

Shucks Fish House & Oyster Bar began as a weekly oyster night at Absolutely Fresh Seafood Market, a fish market in West Omaha. The oyster nights drew so many regulars that the market ran out of seats, and the first restaurant opened in 2006 at 119th and Pacific, attached to the market. The company says its aim is to bring a little of the coasts back to Omaha.

The 119th Street restaurant is the original, and the company has since added a second room at Legacy and a downtown spot at 19th and Leavenworth, for three locations in all. This one is casual and unfussy, in the spirit of a neighborhood fish house, with a bar where oysters on the half shell remain the headline item.

Beyond the raw bar, the kitchen covers the usual fish house territory: chowders and gumbo, po' boys, crab cakes, fried seafood plates, pastas and fish entrees, plus a kids menu and signature cocktails. The restaurant says most of its menu can be made gluten free, and it marks those dishes with an icon. A weekly newsletter lists weekend specials.

Shucks works well for a relaxed family dinner, a seafood craving in a landlocked state, or a happy hour that starts at 2 pm and runs to 6 pm daily for dine-in guests. Reservations are not taken and there is no call-ahead seating, so expect to wait at peak dinner times, especially on weekends.
