Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

A curving cable-stayed footbridge over the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa. Walk across to stand in two states in one outing.

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge carries walkers and cyclists across the Missouri River between Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The National Park Service notes that it was completed in September 2008 and describes it as the longest pedestrian bridge linking two states, with a main span of 3,000 feet.

The bridge is a cable-stayed design with a gently curving shape that echoes the meandering river below. That curve gives walkers shifting views of the water, the downtown skyline and the Iowa bluffs as they cross. A round trip is about 1.1 miles, so it is an easy outing for most visitors. Part of the fun is the state line, which crosses the middle of the bridge. Many people stop to take photos with one foot in each state. Interpretive signs along the route tell the story of the river, and the structure is lit after dark, making evening walks popular.

Access from the Omaha side is right beside The RiverFront, close to Lewis & Clark Landing and the Kiewit Luminarium. A newer branch known as Baby Bob, connecting to 10th Street, was completed in March 2025, according to the NPS. On the Iowa side, the path joins Council Bluffs' riverfront trails. The bridge is free and well suited to couples, families and anyone who enjoys open air. Wind off the river can be strong, and there is little shade on the span, so dress for the weather and bring water in summer.
