Ika San Ramen & Izakaya

A Japanese ramen and izakaya spot on Jones Street in the Old Market. It is known for tonkotsu ramen with a long-simmered pork broth and for small plates like pork belly buns.

Ika San is the Old Market location of Ika Ramen & Izakaya, a family-run Omaha ramen brand. The owner's ramen idea began as a Sunday special at a fusion seafood restaurant in 2012, and the first Ika opened in Benson in 2015. The business now has five Ika locations, with Ika San described as the bigger sister in the Old Market.

The Old Market restaurant is at 1114 Jones Street, tucked into an alley, and its website says the space has all the vibes. The concept is a no-rules izakaya built around ramen, donburi, gyoza, poke and small plates. The menu has chicken, pork and vegetarian ramen broths, steam buns with fillings such as pork belly, mushroom, fried chicken, beef galbi and birria, and small plates including Izakaya Fries, Devil's Lettuce and a Crab Rangoon Roll.

Rice bowls and poke bowls round things out, and happy hour has drinks such as sake bombs and sake specials. Happy hour runs Monday through Thursday until 6 pm, with a reverse happy hour late on Fridays. It is a good pick for a casual dinner or a quick bowl in the Old Market, and the vegetarian ramen and bowls help mixed groups.
