Mr. Toad

An English-style pub on the ground floor of the historic Hotel Howard, open since 1970, with wood beams, stained glass and a carved fireplace mantel. Its courtyard is described as Omaha's oldest outdoor drinking space and is a favorite for people-watching on warm days.

Mr. Toad is an English-style pub on the ground floor of the former Hotel Howard at 1002 Howard Street. The concept came from Rusty Harmsen in 1969, who brought in bar owner Artie Abariotes, and the pub opened in 1970. The name comes from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

The interior was assembled from antiques and salvaged pieces, including a hand-carved fireplace mantel, stained glass, oak pews from Girls Town and benches from the county courthouse. In 1972 the pub expanded into the neighboring children's store, The Looking Glass, doubling its capacity.

Its courtyard, approved in 1983 after years of planning, is described as the oldest outdoor drinking area in Omaha. The courtyard is especially popular in good weather. It is a classic, no-frills Old Market stop for a drink with some history; the pub has no website that we could find, so call or check social pages for current hours.
