Avoli Osteria
A cozy Italian osteria in historic Dundee, in operation since 2013, with warm lighting, chandeliers and a rustic dining room. The kitchen turns out hand-made pasta, risotto and grilled octopus alongside an Italian-leaning cocktail and wine list.
Avoli Osteria is a Northern Italian restaurant at 5013 Underwood Avenue in Omaha's Dundee neighborhood. It was opened in July 2013 by Dario and Amy Schicke, who named it by combining their daughters' names, Ava and Olivia. Dario is a classically trained chef originally from Sarajevo, Bosnia, and his stated approach is that it is all about the details.
The couple met in Munich, lived in New York City until September 2001, and then moved to Omaha to raise their family. Before Avoli they opened a neighborhood cafe, Dario's Brasserie, in 2006, which they closed in 2022 to concentrate on the osteria. The restaurant has a private room available for celebrations.
Avoli publishes separate dinner, wine and cocktail menus on its website, so the drink side is treated as a real part of the program alongside the kitchen. Dinner is served only a few nights a week, and the posted window is fairly early, which makes planning ahead worthwhile. It is a good fit for a sit-down dinner for couples or small groups, or for a celebration in the private room. Service is Wednesday through Sunday evenings only, so build the night around that. Reservations are linked from the restaurant's own website.
