Lithuanian Bakery & Kafe
Family bakery on Pacific Street with more than 40 years in business, producing specialty breads and Lithuanian tortes. It also sells by mail order and wholesale.
Lithuanian Bakery is an Omaha family bakery whose own site says it has been in business for more than 40 years, and The Reader reported in 2013 that it opened in 1963 in South Omaha, founded by Stephanjia and Vytautas Mackevicius. The original shop remains on South 33rd Avenue, and a second shop with a cafe operates at 7427 Pacific Street. The bakery calls itself an Omaha producer of specialty breads and Lithuanian tortes.
The Pacific Street location is the one with the cafe. The bakery's website lists weekday hours of 8 am to 6 pm and Saturday hours of 8 am to 4 pm, with lunch served Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. It is closed on Sundays. Both locations bake daily, and the company also sells wholesale and by mail order through its online shop.
The bread list is short and distinctive. Sourdough rye, the best seller, comes in traditional and square forms with caraway and a hint of onion, while pumpernickel is an Old World-style dense loaf that slices thin, and country rye blends sourdough and pumpernickel. The Napoleon torte has eight wafer layers with vanilla and lemon butter creams and an apricot-flavored middle, and there is a chocolate version with nuts.
It is a worthwhile stop for a weekday lunch, for picking up a loaf or torte to take home, or for gifts that are hard to find elsewhere in the city. Because the cafe keeps weekday and Saturday daytime hours only, plan around the schedule, and confirm lunch offerings directly since the website does not list a cafe menu.
