The Drover

A western-themed steakhouse in the Aksarben area with brick and stucco walls, wood-beam ceilings and fireplace nooks. It bills itself as the home of the original whiskey steak, and an old-school salad bar is part of the draw. Open for lunch on weekdays and dinner nightly.

The Drover has been an Omaha steakhouse since 1977 and calls itself the home of the Original Whiskey Steak. The restaurant sits at 2121 South 73rd Street in the Aksarben area, and its signature steaks are marinated in a house blend that includes whiskey. The website says each steak is marinated only after it is ordered, for fifteen minutes.

The dining room is western in style, with rustic brick and stucco walls, wood-beam ceilings and fireplace nooks. A long-running salad bar is part of the identity; the restaurant says it was one of the first of its kind in Omaha. The menu is traditional steakhouse rather than trend-driven. Steaks include the Whiskey Filet, Whiskey Top Sirloin, Whiskey New York Strip and Whiskey Rib-Eye, along with prime rib and specialty cuts like a T-bone and bone-in rib-eye. Other entrees cover pork chops, chicken, a teriyaki tenderloin kabob, shrimp, crab legs, lobster, salmon and halibut.

Dinners come with bread, soup or salad, and a side. Lunch is served on weekdays, and a lounge pours cocktails in the afternoon before dinner service starts. It suits family dinners, celebrations and anyone who wants a classic steak night. Reservations are taken through OpenTable.
