Cascio's Steakhouse

The last of Omaha's old Italian steakhouses, run by the Cascio family since 1946 at 10th and Hickory on the south edge of Little Italy. Steaks share the menu with Sicilian-rooted red-sauce dishes like chicken parmigiano and spaghetti with meatballs. The big dining room keeps its retro look, and party rooms handle large groups.

Cascio's Steakhouse opened in 1946, when brothers Joe and Al Cascio started Cascio's Grille in a former drugstore near 10th and Hickory streets. It turned into a steakhouse in the early 1950s, and after a 1978 fire destroyed the original building the family rebuilt on the same corner. Today third-generation owner Alfie Cascio runs it, and local press describes it as the last of the Italian steakhouses that once dotted Omaha.

The building is big, with a main dining room and bar, a basement event center and a VIP room. The main dining room has kept its brown-and-orange, mid-century look on purpose, while the bar has been updated and serves the full menu. It sits on the southern edge of Little Italy, a short drive from downtown.

The recipes trace back to Carlentini, Sicily. Chicken parmigiano is the top seller, and the long-simmered spaghetti sauce is a family secret. Steaks come with a baked potato and a side of pasta, and the menu also covers Italian beef cutlets, eggplant parmigiano, chicken marsala, fettuccine Alfredo, toasted ravioli and onion rings. The house Roquefort dressing and sauce are sold to go.

Cascio's suits groups, family celebrations and anyone curious about Omaha's old-school dining. Weekday lunch is a calmer way to try it, with lighter plates, sandwiches and a smaller luncheon steak. The party rooms make it a practical choice for rehearsal dinners or large gatherings, and tables can be booked on OpenTable.
