Olsen Bake Shop
A family bakery on South 10th Street between Little Italy and Little Bohemia, at this address since 1947 and now run by a later generation of the Olsen family. It's a classic early-morning stop for glazed donuts, kolaches, pastries, cookies and rolls. Go early, since popular items can sell out.
Olsen Bake Shop is a family bakery at 1708 South 10th Street, in the stretch between Little Italy and Little Bohemia. Its roots go back to Holzapfel Bakery, opened by Hungarian immigrant Anton Holzapfel, which moved into this 1926 brick building in 1947. Holzapfel's son-in-law, Louis Olsen Sr., took over and renamed it, and the Olsen family has run it through several generations since.
It's an old-fashioned neighborhood bakery: a counter, cases of the day's baking, and regulars who have been coming for years. Local TV coverage of National Donut Day in 2022 showed customers lined up outside before opening. The bakery has also been a good neighbor, lending its ovens to Orsi's after a 1997 fire.
Glazed donuts are the headline item, and the shop also turns out kolaches, pastries, cookies, rolls and croissants. Its donuts have traveled across Omaha, too: Stella's has used them as the bun for a donut burger special, and Infusion Brewing brewed a glazed donut milk stout with them in 2022.
Plan this as an early-morning stop for a box of donuts or kolaches to bring back to your rental for breakfast. Popular items can sell out, so earlier is better, especially on weekends. Call ahead to confirm hours before you go.
